Of all the crystal used in jewellery Swarovski crystal is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful. Founded by the Czech Daniel Swarovski in 1895 the Swarovski company was a crystal cutting factory in the town of Wattens, Austria. Swarovski had invented the first automated crystal cutting machine in 1892 and three years later moved to Wattens to take advantage of the areas flourishing hydroelectric power. Since than the Swarovski crystal has become one of the most widely recognised crystal in the world and is known for its exceptional clarity, sparkle and cut. The crystals come in many shapes and colours and owe thier brilliant sparkle to a glass composition containing 32 percent lead and special metallic coatings to refract the light in a rainbow spectrum. Swarovski crystal can be found in all types of jewellery, clothing and home decorations.

Another type of crystal popular in jewellery is Czech crystal. This crystal dates back to the renaissance period. At the beginning of the 17th century Italian and German cutters began to cut the natural crystal called "mountain crystal" which was found throughout the Czech Republic. In 1683 a chalk glass similiar to the natural crystal was found and the Bohemian glass factories decided to use this instead. Great care is taken to ensure the old, traditional methods are used to produce Czech crystal which , like Swarovski crystal, is known for its quality and clarity. A lead content of 24 percent ensures that Czech crystal has a clear crystalline sparkle.
